Titans Select California RB Khalfani Muhammad in 7th Round
April 29, 2017 10:15 PM | Jim Wyatt
NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Add another running back to the stable for the Tennessee Titans.

California running back Khalfani Muhammad, however, considers himself different.

With their final pick in the NFL Draft, the Titans selected Muhammad, with the 241st pick overall.

Muhammad (5-7, 174) rushed for 2,073 yards on 359 carries during his career at Cal. He finished his career with 14 touchdowns, and also had 55 catches for 571 receiving yards.

He played in all 45 games at Cal from 2013-16, and ranked second on Cal's all-time list in kick returns (87) and kick return yards (1,931). His 4,375 career all-purpose yards are third in school history.

"I am versatile, man," Muhammad said. "I can bring a whole new dynamic to the game. I am capable of pretty doing it all. I can run the ball, catch the ball, I can make tackles on the coverage units and stuff like that. I am going to bring you something different that many backs that I thought in this draft class don't have.

"I was just waiting for my call, and it happened. And now I have a place where I can go out and showcase it."

DeMarco Murray finished third in the NFL in rushing in 2016, and Derrick Henry played a key role in his rookie season as well. The team hasn't re-signed running back Antonio Andrews, who was third on the team in yards among running backs.

"Those are big backs," Muhammad said. "I am a smaller back, more of a speed back. So I bring something different, and that is one of the reasons the Tennessee Titans decided to go ahead and draft me. So hey, when I get there I am going to showcase why I am different and I am going to work from there and build my own name."

Titans general manager Jon Robinson said the team traveled to California to work Muhammad out, and left impressed.

"He's a really fast running back," Robinson said. "He plays on kickoff cover for Cal, and also has handled kickoff returns at Cal. Don't let his size fool he - he doesn't shy away from hitting it up in there and trying to move it. But he is more of a change-of-pace speed type back who really caught the ball well out of the backfield for us when we worked him out."

Muhammad, who is from Inglewood, Calif., said he's buddies with new Titans cornerback Adoree' Jackson. Muhammad said he beat Jackson plenty of times in track when they competed growing up, but acknowledges Jackson beat him in the last outing.

Muhammad said he's looking forward to being reunited with Jackson, and joining the Titans.

"I love the thought of it, man," Muhammad said. "It's a great opportunity, one not a lot of people get. So I am excited for it, I am looking forward to it. I am a southern dude now and that is how I am going to have to roll."
